Avian Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (ADDL) was established on 08/10/1979 as per G.O.(RT) No.2922/79/AD dated 07/9/1979. ADDL, located in Thiruvalla, serves as the referral laboratory for the diagnosis and control of diseases affecting birds in the state. Dedicated to serving the farming community, ADDL provides rapid and precise diagnosis of diseases and offers treatment for birds. Additionally, ADDL functions as a regional disease diagnostic laboratory, catering to the districts of Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Idukki in Kerala.
- Serve as the primary state laboratory for diagnosing diseases in birds.
- Function as a regional disease diagnostic laboratory, catering to the diagnosis and control of diseases among livestock and pet animals in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Idukki districts of Kerala.
- Act as a regional laboratory for disease investigation and sample collection for diagnosing diseases among livestock and pet animals.
- Conduct field studies aimed at managing and controlling various diseases.
- Undertake Disease Investigation Surveys.
- Conduct studies on Disease Surveillance.
- Collect basic disease data.
- Provide technical advisory services for disease control and management to Veterinary and allied institutions.
- Conduct research and diagnose diseases using molecular diagnostic tools.
- Engage in extension activities.
- Conduct studies on Antimicrobial Resistance.
Activities of ADDL:
- Perform postmortem examinations, diagnose diseases, and provide treatment recommendations for domestic animals and poultry.
- Examine samples from domestic animals and poultry and issue test reports.
- Detect and quantify aflatoxin levels in feed samples for domestic animals and poultry.
- Conduct Rabies Diagnosis.
- Isolate, identify, perform antibiogram tests on various bacteria, and issue test reports.
- Conduct histopathological examinations of tissues collected during postmortem examinations of domestic animals and poultry, and issue reports.
- Collect and dispatch samples to SRDDL, Bangalore, and NIHSAD, Bhopal, for avian influenza testing.
- Provide training on advanced diagnostic methodologies for officers and technical staff of the Animal Husbandry Department.
- Conduct disease awareness classes for farmers.
